Today is my dad's birthday. He has lived long enough to possibly see his granddaughter graduate from college. He is in good health and I plan to see him on Sunday. On the other hand, the father in this article will not live to see even his children graduate from college: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07262/818671-298.stm .

Yeah, probably not, and Randy sounds like a great guy. As I read that article yesterday, all I could think was "Only the good die young." *sigh*

My father is taking more after his grandfather than his father (thank goodness). His father had emphysema the last ten years of his life and died in his early 70s. I only remember him leaving his house one time in all those years.

His grandfather (his mother's father in this case) lived to be 86 and was reasonably active until near the end.

My dad just turned 78.

Both my grandmother and mother died from complications from emphysema but both smoked. My mother also had a third of lung removed due to cancer. It's good that your father is taking after his grandfather.
