Just a note, it's -3 degrees Fahrenheit in Pittsburgh right now with a wind chill of -19 degrees F. This is in sharp contrast to the heat wave we had in mid-January. All the major school districts cancelled school for today. But both my car and the Klingon's car started right up (gotta love Honda) this morning. I did not want to get out of the warm bed this morning and consequently got up a half hour late and still managed to put some beans on to soak (for vegetarian chili, I made the meat kind last night) and assemble my lunch for today. (Breakfast was instant hot cereal eaten at work with raisins and cranberries.) I stopped at a national coffee chain on my walk from where I park to work since it was about midway and I needed to warm up.
I find this weather oddly romantic because my husband and I met during record low temperatures in January of 1985 while both attending college. I don't think that the university cancelled classes then and they haven't today.

Pitt has cancelled classes three times in all in its 220 year history, and then only under direct orders of the Governor's office. In two of those cases, classes were cancelled but staff was still ordered to report. In the first case, in the blizzard and deep freeze of January 1994, the University at large closed, but "essential personnel" had to report (if I remember aright, the food service folk threatened to strike over that) and the grad student workers (of which I was one at the time) had to make up the hours all the same.

I'm not surprised, there are still students living in the dorms and they have to have food to eat. It's the same thing where I work. The one time classes were cancelled here, since I've been working, was President's Day 2002, I think, and then essential personnel had to report. (I stayed home and worked remotely until they decided to cancel classes.)

I'm not disagreeing that the food service people were essential personnel--just saying that THEY were more than a little put out about it (plus, being called "essential" and having to report to work in dangerous conditions, then getting paid less than a living wage, is a kick in the teeth to say the least). This may go some way in explaining the notorious surliness of the food service staff here. ;D
