Since the CEO of Whole Foods has come out against what the current administration is doing concerning health care, I decided to check out Right by Nature as an alternative to shopping at Whole Foods and therefore giving the CEO more money. I am already familiar with the East End Food Co-op and will probably become a member in support of it, but I'm also often in the Strip District so Right by Nature will also be convenient. It's a bit roomier than the co-op and seems to offer more choices in many areas including produce, refrigerated and frozen items. Both are locally owned and both support local farmers so I figure I won't lose if I shop at both and give Whole Foods a pass. In addition, there is also a farmers market held on Saturdays in the Strip before noon. So, in all, I can do without Whole Foods and not support Mr. Mackey's agenda.

I don't know the best answer to the health care issues, and Mackey has some valid points about the high cost of litigation in our society. But that last point about eating better and obesity rates rather pissed me off.

You know what, sir? Eating well costs MONEY. Fish is more expensive than hamburger. Vegetables are more expensive and less filling in the long run than Mac N Cheese. You want people to combat their weight issues? Make good, healthy food easier to afford, buddy.

I think it's always been true that eating healthily is more expensive than not. Which is sad.

A distant cousin ate herself into an early grave due to her eating habits. I don't think I ever asked my father if she'd had to money to do otherwise. (And, thinking about that, I believe I will do so.)

Of the five children in my family, four of them had real weight issues as a child/teen and we WERE active. Living out in the country we walked a lot, or at least I did.

But we also ate a lot of carbohydrate-heavy casseroles, because with five kids to raise, my mom's income didn't go all THAT far, and ground beef and hot dogs were the meats we could afford, with roasts being a "special" item, only on Sundays. (now I'll stop spamming Heidi's journal)

Actually, I'm not sure it's really all that much more expensive but it can be limited to beans and rice with a little bit of smoked meat to flavor and a lot of people aren't willing to eat that day in and day out. It used to be that the coarser whole grains were the less expensive and the refined grains/flours were more expensive meaning that the wealthier people ate the bad for you stuff.

I have two very big problems with his arguments. One is that this is unfunded. My understanding is that the administration wants to raise taxes to pay for it. The second is that deregulation of the health insurance industry is part of the answer and that is just so wrong as the insurance industry will drop people from insurance so fast your head will spin and these people will end up being bankrupt or dead.

Glad I've never been much into Whole Foods.

That said, it is very expensive to eat healthy, and even locally and organically. In college, I had friends who told me they were vegetarian because they couldn't afford meat. I thought they were crazy, being familiar with how much it costs to buy fresh veggies. Then I realized they were living on spaghetti and sauce and nothing else. Ick.

Now a days, I'm biting the bullet and doing my best to feed my family healthy foods, and I'm lucky to be able to afford it.

People criticizing others when they can't afford healthcare and also can't afford to eat well make me crazy. Especially coming from a store I've been affectionately calling "Whole Paycheck" for years.
