Very briefly, his new music and style doesn't speak to me. I've never stood for 3 and half hours for a concert, not even concerts I've been in but we *had* to stand for this concert. We arrived at the venue and there were no chairs set out but there were racks of folding chairs against the wall. A few people took some chairs down. [livejournal.com profile] mewsrissicat who I attended the concert with, along with [livejournal.com profile] mewsgryphoncat and soranokumo, asked the person at the front door if it was okay for us to get the chairs out and he indicated it was. After about half an hour we were told via amplified voice that this was not what Jonathan Coulton wanted, "This is a rock n roll concert, people" and instructed to put the chairs back. Needless to say, I'm no longer his audience. I like rock n roll but his songs didn't speak to me the way his older music did. They didn't tell stories, at least not discernable ones and there wasn't as much musicality to them. I'm disappointed.

We were chatting on the way home, and I mentioned to the others that I think I would have been more comfortable in the changes if he'd had the sound crew dial back the drums by 3, and the guitars by 1.

Not being able to hear the lyrics of the new music very well made it really hard to judge how I felt about the changes as a whole.

(And yes, I *do* sound like a fogey. XD )

I agree it was too loud and that made it difficult to hear anything but the musicians. When he did "Creepy Doll" I was annoyed by the bass drum beat. I leaned back and said to Nancy that I didn't think the song was about "The Telltale Heart". I may try to find some Youtube videos of the new stuff and see if I like it any better but if it all sounds like last night's concert, probably not.

Also, someone commented on FB that she thought it was the Rex's decision to get rid of the chairs. And that the sound mixing was off, too (essentially what you said).

I would have left. I refuse to stand for anything for three and a half hours.
