Pittsburgh used to be known as the "Smoky City". This was literally true seventy years ago when the steel mills poured so much soot into the atmosphere that, at times, it was pitch black at noon and cars had their headlights on to see. You couldn't keep a white shirt clean. I know this because my husband's grandfather lived through this time and said that's how it was some days. If you go to the Heinz History Center you can see pictures. Sometime in the 1950s the steel mills instituted some measures to clean up the smoke that came out of the production of steel and by the late 1960s, Pittsburgh was no longer a "Smoky City". Humans have been creating machines that emit gases into the environment for over a hundred years. I believe that there has to be some consequences to this behavior. In addition, the resources we currently use for energy won't last forever. Unless we come up with low cost viable alternatives, we'll be paying a premium to have a computer on and surf the Internet. Conservation of current resources is a start and it also cuts down on emissions. I don't see why this would be a bad thing.
