The Borough of Churchill did not plow and/or salt my street (a short dead end, mind you) until 4 pm! I did attempt to venture out to work at noon only to turn around two miles in when I was on one of the main roads and it was still not very passable. I ended up having to park in the driveway of my neighbors two doors away. They valiantly tried to help me get up the little incline to my driveway but my car just couldn't get a grip on the icy street. I ended up taking half a day of PTO. So, when the borough plow did finally come by, I walked down and got in my car and took it over to get the ice thawed off and get a new exhaust system. I started to hear the engine louder on Monday and I didn't want to drive four hours to Bradford this weekend with all that noise. By the time I got home, the Klingon was home and doing some shoveling. I fixed a quick dinner for both of us and tidied up the kitchen. I slept well last night and had to get up early for work as they don't like it when I reboot the servers during the work day for some reason. :-P My commute in this morning took about 15 minutes longer. I'm planning on staying later tonight to compensate and reboot servers.
Musings on Valentine's Day
Feb. 9th, 2007 12:53 pmA recent NPR commentary on florists and Valentine's Day got me thinking that I'm glad I don't expect flowers on February 14th. In fact, if I get flowers, it's not from my husband. First, let me explain. He's not a selfish pig at all. In fact, I cherish the surprises he give me because they are not expected. My favorite Valentine's Day gift happened more because of timing than because of the day. We had just bought our house and he was pulling up the carpet in the dining room and kitchen (yes carpeted kitchen, ick!) and found some hardwood floors in need of attention. My Valentine's Day gift was refinished hard wood floors in my kitchen! They're still beautiful and because it was unexpected and not dependent on a designated day of the year, it remains a reminder of his love for me. I never know when he'll come home with a bag or a box will arrive on the porch and he'll pull out something I had on my Amazon wish list or had mentioned that I'd really like to have. Again, because these things are not expected and truly surprises they are even more special than the obligatory dozen long-stemmed roses delivered the same day each year would ever be. I'm not going to get mad just becaue he forgets some special date because what I get the rest of the year more than makes up for that.
