Back from Philcon
Nov. 21st, 2011 09:50 amMy Philcon experience was both awesome and concerning. I made the drive with
elionwyr and Bones. They are both delightful travel companions. We shared a room and also helped a bit with staffing SJ Tucker's dealer room table. SJ Tucker's performances were awesome! She has a wonderful voice and she and the wonderful Betsy Tinney on cello made a wonderful musical team. I also attended a very informative and well run panel on Making movies from Comic books with thoughful contribution from panel member
popfiend. I was later privileged to spend a little time with
popfiend and his wife, Lisa, and received a small treasure chest of Lisa's famous cookies including cranberry, oatmeal white chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookies and awesome hugs from the hugmaster himself,
popfiend. I also attended a very interesting panel which included
kylecassidy on art appreciation. And one interesting panel on Alien Construction with Joan Slonczewski as a moderator.
The concerning parts were what I considered a very light and not very interesting literary track and what seemed to be low attendance. The programming did not come out until earlier in the week and the website had very little information about any invited guests other than the GOH and Musical Guest. This may have been, in part, to SFContario which had John Scalzi as GOH and Gardner Dozois as editor GOH being on the same weekend. The masquerade had 15 entries which was up from last year and there were more hall costumes than I remember seeing the previous year but the Art Show also seemed very light. I have a sense that Philcon has lost its focus somehow.
