Kimono as Art in Canton, OH
Apr. 19th, 2009 12:26 pmI went yesterday with
thehouseofmews and
kaitou1412 to the Kimono as Art exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, OH. Words cannot adequately describe the beauty of these kimonos. Itchiku Kubota, the artist, studied the long lost art of dying silk with dyes and inks and using silver and gold threads to embroider the cloth to produce light effects. Walking into the room that held the 30 kimono in the monumental landscape work entitled "Symphony of Light" was an emotionally moving experience. Before his death in 2003, the artist had planned a 75 kimono work depicting all four seasons. He only completed the two seasons, Autumn and Winter, which are depicted in these 30 kimono. The pictures on the website do not do the kimono justice. They must be viewed in person for full appreciation. The man was truly a master of his craft and a master artist in using the silk woven with metal thread, the texturing of tying the silk, the color of the dyes and inks, and embroidery to produce these works of art. The exhibit runs through April 26, 2009.
ETA: We were not permitted to take pictures. We were told it was due to copyright considerations. I suppose it's because a catalog has been produced of the kimono.
