Weekend note
Oct. 26th, 2008 08:46 pmAfter having to be at work yesterday morning due to the voicemail being down, I got home, made sleek with collard greens instead of kale, but still tasty. Ate it for lunch. Got cleaned up and then went to John and Laurie's wedding which was held at a church about 5 minutes from my house. I went with my friend Teri. I was glad to go because I got to see Dan and Heather and Mike. Old friends whom I hadn't seen in years and we got caught up and I got to make them feel old by telling them that
amg04 will be graduating from college in December. We didn't go to the reception.
After that, Teri and I went to the Rivertowne Pour House in Monroeville. The Rivertowne Pour House is where the brewmaster from John Harvard's went. It is also the location of the former Parkway Tavern. I had been to the Parkway Tavern a couple of times before and had not been impressed enough to give it a second thought. As the Rivertowne Pour House, they have a selection of 18 handcrafted beers! (The beer list on the website is somewhat out of date, but some of the beers are still offered.) We sampled a few and I had a Dark Helmet (gotta love that name). We sampled the Drunken Leprechaun but it was a bit too bitter for me. I wasn't impressed with the Pumpkin Spice beer and I must say that cinnamon and sugar on the rim did nothing to enhance that experience. The cranberry beer was rather tart, which I liked. In addition, they have Woodchuck Cider and mixed drinks. The food was upscale bar food and they cook their hamburgers to order as Teri had the Western burger and ordered it cooked on the outside and cold in the middle and that's what she got. I got a buffalo chicken wrap. They made their fries and chips in house and both were good. We also ordered the potato skins appetizer and were somewhat disappointed in those. The cheddar cheese was so mild as to be almost tasteless. The potato skins didn't have much potato flavor, either. I ordered half a dozen wings to go for
dergeis. All in all, I'm impressed enough to add it in to my restaurant rotation and come back again. In fact, I'm anxious to try their fried calamari to see if it's anything like the calamari at John Harvard's which I miss.
I finished the knitted washcloth that I was working on and then read some of Just a Geek by Wil Wheaton which is a collection of stories from his blogs with additional writing turning it into a memoir of sorts. Since I read Wil Wheaton's blog regularly, it's good to be able to start "from the beginning" so to speak with it in this book and read some of his reflections on the experience.
Today I helped a friend out with an office move. We packed up the servers and moved them to the new location and got them set up, connected and booted. That part went fairly well although he was sidetracked quite a bit with stuff that hadn't been finished (by other people) so it was good that I offered to help him out or he'd still be there.
dergeis and I went to Foli's Place in Braddock Hills for dinner because I had a birthday certificate for a free entree from there that expires at the end of the month. The food was good but it was standard bar food and there is nothing in particular that distinguishes this place from any other bar so it's not some place I'd make a point of going to on a regular basis.
